I have now got a removable hard drive for this machine so I can test new
stuff without trashing the working system.

I installed the latest daily, which uses kernel 2.6.15-14-386. The
behaviour is the same: sound is fine before suspend, no sound after
suspend, but applications continue to play merrily away.
