I had forgotten I had submitted this bug report.

After a large number of reboots of the two machines after the upgrade to
Dapper, both spontaneously started working.  As far as I am aware both
work fine under Edgy.

Apologies for not "closing" this bug when the problem went away.

(It is still irritating that the Vaio doesn't support scanning under
Ubuntu, it certainly does under Windows.  I guess this is a driver issue
and down to a lack of information available to the Linux device driver
writer.  Ho hum.)
