For me, it seems to be the master volume that is the problem, not the PCM volume. I can't hear anything with PCM at 0, but with PCM up and Master at 0 then I can hear it. (ENS1371 - Ensoniq AudioPCI) -- sound still comes out of speakers when PCM volume is set to 0 https://launchpad.net/bugs/16454
