lately i tried an older kernel, 2.6.15-23-686 that I could download from
ftp://ftp.port80.se/ubuntu/pool/main/l/linux-source-2.6.15/ .

It seems to be stable on my edgy system (I did'nt get any "ata1 is slow to respond").
The same kernel on dapper kept on freezing up.
