same here again.
2.6.17-5 (if I remember well) don't boot at all, it uncompress the kernel, load essential modules and then hang on "mounting root filesystem".
the timeout could be changed in include/linux/libata.h
bu modifying ATA_TMOUT_BOOT, it is then used in 
drivers/scsi/libata-core.c

check this out, might be a solution.
