It is not enough to restart alsa-utils, the whole system has to be restarted. I can confirm this bug on my Dell Dimension 8300, with Dell Soundblaster Live! soundcard. -- suspend problems: alsa crashes, amarok hangs https://launchpad.net/bugs/48536
