[Bug 54797] Long delay during "mounting root filesystem" at boot

Thinkpad t60p (SATA internal hard drive).  Upgraded to linux-686-smp and
suddenly there is a long delay at boot in the "mounting root filesystem"
step.  The disk sees some short bursts of activity during this period,
but nothing really proceeds for a good ten seconds or more.
