I have this problem too, and the only workaround I found out was keeping an open terminal with ping in order to let me easily understand when it stopped working and...

... as soon as I notice anything strange I unplug, restart network, and plug again.

If it disconnects by itself for a certain period of time, then you're toast. A reboot will be required, but it won't even reboot cleanly.

HOWEVER, I'm figuring it is a chipset/firmware problem. Why? Simple: a friend of mine also suffers from this problems... on Windows!

He eventually threw away his usb stick and bought a PCMCIA version.

Today I'm going to try the daily CVS snapshot of the beta driver of rt2x00. Last time I tried it compiled cleanly but wouldn't join the network or record wep key parameters.

Oh, and ndiswrapper is _not_ the way to go. This driver is fully Free Software, so don't go for the proprietary version ;)
