Wierd ... now the machine is booting just fine ....  It must have been
some wierd hardware hiccough.  Although that doesn't completely make
sense either, because  during the 30 minutes that this was happening,
grub always detected the master harddrive as hd0 and the slave as hd1
... In any case, I'll re-open this if I see the behavior again.
