Tried the -21 kernel.  A little bit different results.
When i use sleep, the computer will go to sleep.  I can push a button, and it will try to wake up.  The computer will start up again, but there will be no signal to my monitor.  It will then hang and I must do a hard reboot.

When I hibernate, it will turn off as expected.  When I turn the power back on, everything boots as normal (into GDM) rather than back into my previous state.
