David, you said that this machine ran gentoo fine. Do you still have access to this gentoo? Can you try to dual-boot them between the latest dapper and latest gentoo?

People say that this is hardware-caused. Perhaps your machine just become defective about the same time you installed ubuntu.

As a suggestion, can you try to compile gentoo's kernel on ubuntu and see what it happens, so we can know for sure it is ubuntu the culprit?
