My card (Marvell Technology Group Ltd. 88E8036 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (rev 10)) hangs with the sky2 driver in 2.6.15-20-686 (and 386) ubuntu kernels too.
Sky2 on vairous kernels has always made my card hang once given a modest load. Listening to an mp3 stream seems ok but once download speeds get over 100-200kb/s, things stop. This isn't acceptable for a gigabit card. Upstream fixes haven't helped me either (as of mm-sources-2.6.17-rc1-mm3 on gentoo but I've tried various other vanilla and mm kernels).
The sk98lin driver provided by syskonnect.de works fine on kernels up to 2.6.15, either patched into the kernel or built separately.
On 2.6.16 and 2.6.17 kernels, things are a little tricky. The driver cannot be built separately but it can be patched into the kernel. Once the syskonnect patch is applied, the patch at http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0602.1/1630.html is needed before compiling, due to a few changes in the 2.6.16 kernel.
