... my patch from the post above seems to work. After removing the PCI device ID for the old fullmax card (3890) from the new softmac driver the situation after inserting the card is:

only prism54 isloaded

I think this should not break anything for users of non-PCI-ID-3980 devices, their IDs are still available in  th islsm* module. Futhermore it could be necessary to remove those IDs also from prism54 (it claims to be "hotpluggable" for 3886 devices which are only supported by islsm*, don't know what to do with the 3877 device also listed there)

Of course the whole islsm* driver is useless without the 2.x firmware present in the according linux-restriced-modules-2.6.15-XY package. So please include
