[Bug 35866] live cd can not mount root filesystem

Description:
the current dapper flight 5 live cd crashes while mounting the
filesystem.  after a long string of error messages, I am presented with
a root shell.

vertical lines are present in the usplash logo and text, spaced at
approximately every 20 pixels.

i'm running on a Dell inspiron 8200.  Breezy works without issue, but
also displays vertical line distortions during usplash.
