had the same with my Athlon 2000+ on an ASUS A7N266-VM. After installation of Kubuntu Dapper Drake flight 6 (kernel: 2.6.15.19-386) when it's time to boot the system for the first time, stoppes booting after:
booting 'Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.15-19-386
root ....
kernel....
initrid....
savedefault
boot

....here stoppes
I've tried with Ubuntu 6.0.6, and had the same thing.
