I found at the FAQ at http://www.linux-usb.org/ that some BIOS are old and cannot handle good enough the USB2.0 ports. So the solution proposed is to turn off the support for USB2.0 from BIOS or upgrade the BIOS.
In my case I had problems with latest windoze (before I turn to linux) and an update of the linux kernel about last november (not reading USB memory stick). I turned off the usb 2.0 support and my devices are working.
However, at the usb view I see only USB 1.0 ports, but all devices I have work properly.
I hope I helped.
