Updating the kernel seems to have fixed the problem. But after I installed/recompiled the ATI drivers the problem came back. I have been following the directions from http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Dapper_Installation_Guide to do the install (not using the dapper packages, last time I tried them my card would no longer do 1280x800).
