I have the same issue with my Compaq v2000 with bcm43xx wireless, \

I have also noticed that waiting for a couple minutes sometimes works too.  It's funny, I usually do a iwconfig, and see if my AP MAC address is listed, once it's listed and not stating "Access Point: Invalid" then it will work.
