[Bug 38026] Dapper won't boot under 686 kernel

Description:
My Dapper installation now won't boot under the i686 kernel installed
via Synaptic. It stalls at "Loading Hardware drivers". Shutdown is the
only way out.

Until today the only problem was the fact that under the 686 kernel
showdown  left the computer live - the HD was shutdown. The 386 kernel
shutsdown EVERYTHING.

This Dapper is flight 3 upgraded daily, the latest was this morning
April 4th.
