I have the same problem with my Sony Vaio VGN-A397XP. This one uses the hda driver on an ICH6 chipset:

0000:00:1b.0 0403: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)

The update to 2.6.15-20 does *Not* fix the problem here. 2.6.15-18 works correctly, 2.6.15-19 does not.
