Hello, this was some time ago, meanwhile I have reinstalled from a newer flight cd, and explicitly selected a lower resolution for the installation so I don't have a problem anymore.
I am sure it displayed "35.7KHz/80Hz" and yes I do have classic PC (The cpu is an amd atlhon xp 1.3 MHz). The BIOS logo does show up correctly during boot. The grub menu did show up correctly, the LCD got out of sync immediately after grub.
