[Bug 32081] Kernel crash accessing a SCSI disk as regular user, after upgrading userland from Hoary to Breezy

Public bug reported:
Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
Severity: Normal
Priority: (none set)
Assignee: Ben Collins
Status: Unconfirmed
Description:
Had a Hoary/AMD64 installation running fine on an IBM eServer
xSeries 226 (model 8648-1AU with 2 Xeon Nocona CPUs, 1GB RAM
and an AIC7902 SCSI HBA). Ubuntu-built EM64-SMP kernel image,
as well as custom built vanilla kernels worked fine.
After performing an upgrade to Breezy, the system boots up
fine but when I attempt to log in as a normal user, a flurry
of SCSI errors comes and the system is inpoerable. HOWEVER,
if I first log in as root, and touch the /home filesystem
which is mounted on the SCSI disk (e.g. by doing ls /home),
everything works fine, and after that I can log in as a normal
user.
After a few minutes, however, the SCSI error will be back again,
and the only possible action would be cutting power. The next
boot, the machine may or may not be operable, resulting in the
SCSI error at the stage of fscking the unclean partition, with
the same output (see below). After that, I can only repair the
machine by booting into SuSE which I have on another drive,
and issue an fsck on /dev/hdb1.
Sorry I am not sure even which package to log this against.
There was no kernel change at the time of userland upgrade,
and this problem is happening with different kernel versions
some of which (2.6.13.4-vanilla and 2.6.8.1-vanilla) are exactly
the same as what I use in SuSE and that works just fine.
Full kernel output follows:
Bootdata ok (command line is root=/dev/sda3 ro console=tty0 vga=0x318 ide0=ata66)

Linux version 2.6.13.4 (root at parmenides) (gcc version 4.0.2 20050808 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.0.1-4ubuntu9)) #11 SMP Sat Dec 24 21:36:07 EST 2005
