Public bug reported:

Affects: alsa-driver (upstream)
       Severity: Unknown
       Priority: Unknown
         Status: Unknown
Affects: alsa-utils (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Rejected
Affects: linux-source-2.6.15 (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: Wontfix
     Assignee: Ubuntu Kernel Team
         Status: Confirmed

Description:
Sound is burst/spotty and sometimes stops for good. I experimented by
rmmod'ing all of the sound modules (there were a lot of them, including,
it seems, both oss and alsa modules), and then modprobing snd-via82xx.
This allows "aplay bong.au" to work, but when I run "ogg123 last\
call.ogg" then it goes back into burst/spotty/silent mode.

Whenever I modprobe snd-via82xx (after first rmmodding everything), my
syslog gets this:

Dec 21 20:00:44 localhost kernel: [ 1127.904611] via82xx: Assuming DXS channels with 48k fixed sample rate.
Dec 21 20:00:44 localhost kernel: [ 1127.904619] Please try dxs_support=5 option
Dec 21 20:00:44 localhost kernel: [ 1127.904623] and report if it works on your machine.
Dec 21 20:00:44 localhost kernel: [ 1127.904626] For more details, read ALSA-Configuration.txt.
Dec 21 20:00:44 localhost kernel: [ 1127.904680] PCI: Setting latency timer of device 0000:00:11.5 to 64

aplay -l says this:
