I experienced the same problem with Ubuntu 5.10 colony 5, with Vmware 4.5.2.

After the first stage of installation. The screen prints: 
"Please stand by while rebooting the system. Restarting the system" forever.

Afterwards, I get "Grub error 18" and cannot boot Ubuntu, but that might be a
different bug.
