There are several machines which don't work with vga16fb on CRT output. sis
hardware appears to be something of a special case.

On the VIA machine I have which doesn't work properly on vga16fb, there's no
obviously significant difference in the crtc setup between the vga16fb case and
the 640x480 vesafb case.
