The kernel-* packages generated by make-kpkg ask (or may ask)
some questions to the user through standard output.

Could you set kernel-* packages to use the debconf interface?

I'm planning to develop a gtk frontend to make-kpkg (to install the
kernel-* packages also) and it wouldn't work without using the GNOME
debconf frontend on those packages (otherwise output would be lost
on stdout)
