It seems to be working for me too.  It's been 30 minutes since I booted the
patched kernel and my desktop icons haven't vanished yet.  I will add a comment
here in the unlikely event that they vanish again.

The patch applies cleanly to the 2.6.12 ubuntu kernel sources.
