It is not possible to account for every combination of hardware. We're certainly
open to ideas for tackling problematic hardware, however.

First, however, we need to know whether disabling PnP OS in BIOS _and_ passing
isapnp=0 to modprobe resolves your issue.

The changelog for alsa-utils lists the rationale for alsaconf's removal.

You should modify only one file, /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.

Certainly this is an issue (a metaissue, if you will) that reaches beyond just
Ubuntu to the kernel and userspace utilities. The most straight-forward solution
may be to fix the bugs in alsaconf that caused its removal from the alsa-utils
package.
