When booting in recovery mode it works. The contents of /proc/cmdline is as
follows when booting in normal mode:

$ cat /proc/cmdline 
root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet splash

Removing the "splash" boot option solves the problem for me. This is using
2.6.12-8-686.
