While I'm fully aware of just how hideous modern mode programming is (mainly
through the Radeon driver -- I've no idea what SiS is like, but can guess), I
would expect both VGA and VESA to 'just work', and be ready to call it a BIOS
bug if it doesn't.  While we should be programming registers properly and
setting all the right modes while fully aware of how to properly set modes, the
BIOS should at least be providing the support structures of VGA and VESA for us
to fall back on, IMO.
