Could you list the Ubuntu versions and kernel versions you were using? Also, a
full dmesg with the USB mass storage device detection would be helpful.
If you can reproduce this with the same USB enclosure, and a different
harddrive, then we can start doing some testing. For one, I'd like to know if
problems occur when you create a filesystem on it, and start doing some work on
the drive. I'm just interested if the problem occurs when using the VFS aswell,
or if it's just direct access.
