Summary: Breezy Kernel 2.6.12-9 not passing acpi=off boot command
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: linux
AssignedTo: ben.collins at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: uncertain_future at yahoo.com
QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
I'm running Ubuntu on an IBM X20, with the 3Com ethernet / modem combo card.
The vortex driver won't work with that card if acpi is on. So, for Hoary, using
the 2.6.10-5 kernel, I just pass the acpi=off command to the kernel using GRUB's
menu.lst at boot, and everything is fine.
I upgraded to Breezy, and set acpi=off in the appropriate line in the menu.lst
for the 2.6.12-9 kernel, but get the following error on boot:
--
localhost kernel [4294675.834000] *** EEPROM MAC address is invalid.
localhost kernel [4294675.834000] 3c59x: vortex_probe1 fails. Returns -22
--
A further scan of the kernel log when that failure occurs as compared to the
2.6.10-5 kernel log turns up a lot of ACPI messages in the 2.6.12-9 boot
process, and *no* mention of the kernel boot-time commands, which are present
very early on in the 2.6.10-5 kernel log.
I'll save the logs separately should you require them.
