I managed to finally get my hands on an AMD pcnet32 based card to test (most
people I tried only had Realtek 8139 cards - it is obviously a very popular and
cheap card). I then loaded the network with tcp stress tests, multiple pbuilder
chroots downloading. The network ran fine, no crash, no lockup - the pbuilder
chroot built in 5 minutes - not 50 with a full cache. No NETDEV WATCHDOG errors
at all. That means that that the problem IS in the 8139too driver - and not in
the BIOS or ACPI as has been suggested by others. For the record I have attached
the dmesg output - and it can clearly be seen that the system is fine. Pity I
have to give the card back soon :(
