this was obviously not a HD problem because many people had it (including i).
however, the problem does seem to have gone away for me with recent updates
(within the last week or so). i have a new laptop i'm using so i haven't
empirically(sp) verified this.

if you, i can send you the laptop which exhibited the problem, so that you can
isolate what exactly caused the problem for future reference. you can zap the
partitions if you want since i have a new laptop and i'm going to reinstall
anyway. there are a couple of conditions:
  1. don't look at any porn or national military secrets that may be on the hard
drive currently.
  2. ship it back in a reasonable amount of time.
  3. include a t-shirt (XL) and a hat (fat head) in the return shipment. so
sissy colors!
