Can you reproduce the problem by seting linux-image-2.6.x-x-686 in synaptic to
"Reinstall" (right-click on it)?

If you can reproduce it, what happens if you run (in a terminal):
$ sudo apt-get install --reinstall  linux-image-2.6.x-x-686
