I can say from my experience with this card that the Orinoco driver included in kernels by default will not 
suffice for scanning. Only newer versions of the Orinoco code scans properly (http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/
orinoco/). It is truly a bummer for people using these cards, because, from what I have ascertained in my Linux 
usage, only Gentoo and Fedora offer support for this newer driver.
