I added: 
printk("%s: breaking out\n",drive->name); 
before the break statement. 
indeed, it says: hdb: breaking out. 
 
I assume this is because the queue for hdb is filled with my requests to open the cdrom. 
 
Could it be that it doesn't want to process the PM requests because these other requests are still in the list?
