I have been having similar problems.  I haven't been able to *prove*
to myself it is Ubuntu, but something is clearly wrong.  Might be
flakey hardware (my notebook has some miles on it), might be my access
point lost its sense, but it sure seemed like it was a couple kernel
updates back that the problem started.  I have been using stock Ubuntu
kernels on a Panasonic W2.  

At the moment I am booted back to Gentoo on a different partition, and
it seems better.  But hard to tell without putting a lot of hours on
it, and I would rather be in Ubuntu.

If anyone has any experiments they would like me to try, let me know.
