I still get the hang with kernel 2.6.14-rc2, at least with laptop-mode on and a
low hd power management/ sleep timeout setting (hdparm -B1 -S1 /dev/hda).

For some yet unidentified reason the disk fails to spin down after five seconds
of idleness, only making a strange sound as if it tried but failed. This seems
to be independent of the kernel version. hdparm -y /dev/hda spins the disk down
properly though. I suspected that smartmond could be the culprit, but disabling
it makes no difference.

If there are any ideas what else to look for i'd be willing to do some experiments.
