This really boggles me. Communication with dbus seems to work fine in general,
but not on this particular location.

Let's check something else first: What is the output of

  sudo hdparm /dev/hdc

? If it says 'using_dma    =  1 (on)', can you please do the following:

 * sudo hdparm -d 0 /dev/hdc
 * sudo /etc/init.d/dbus restart
 * restart your session
 * check whether you still get the same error?
