Hi Ben,
I'm sure I have the same issue here, so please keep this open if there is no
solution yet.

The symptom is that the boot process hangs and the keyboard is frozen.
Some brief background, then you can tell me how to help.

HW: MSI 945g NEO M/B - no cards plugged in so using on board graphics.
Intel Pentium D 830 (EMT64, dual core, C1E bios supported)
    2 * 512MB DDR533

On installing breezy (standard 386 2.6.12-9 kernel) everything works (except
sound). X works great too at 1280x1024.
I then use synaptic to download/install the 2.6.12-9-686 and the
2.6.12-9-686-smp kernels.
The 2.6.12-9-686 kernel boots OK - just like the 2.6.9-12-386 kernel
The 2.6.12-9-686-smp kernel hangs.
BUT
if, in the BIOS, I turn OFF APIC, then it boots. I have tried both APIC on with
mps level 1.1 and 1.4, but both hang.
Leaving APIC "on" in the BIOS, but having "noapic" in the grub boot string also
hangs the boot process.

Please let me know if this is a bug, and if so, how can I help.
Regards,
Zoltan
