I removed splash from the grub boot line but this made no difference for me. 

I have also tried removing vga=771 from the grub boot line and this DOES make a
difference; the desktop screen comes up but with no pointer, the Gnome top and
bottom lines are missing and there is a patterned garbling of the screen
background, the desktop is not usable.

I am using the fglrx driver for my ATI graphics card.
