Hi again - another update:

Taking a closer look at X.org, they have i915GM chipset support in CVS - it will
most likely be in the next release. However this is DRI support, native 2D
should still work with the i810 driver.

I tried on another machine with the same chipset that I just managed to lay my
hands on and it worked - the only difference was the video memory assigned (the
i915GM chipset uses normal RAM for video memory).

I set the problem machine to use the same amount of memory as the new machine
and bingo! A nice new Ubuntu Live desktop! :-)

Looks like not all BIOS settings work - more of an issue at this end I guess!
