I'm experiencing the same thing with the i810 driver.
If I get really close to my monitor, I can see that there's something on it, but
I can hardly make it out, so the monitor is actually on, but the backlight is
still off. I can make this happen by running xset dpms force off, but it also
happens whenever I close the lid. I've put in an "exit 0" at the top of
/etc/acpi/lid.sh, but that didn't help.
It didn't happen when I was running Debian with many different kernel versions..
I've tried running vbetools "vbestate save" while it works and restore it again
when it didn't, and that didn't help either. Nor did vbetool post.
Any good ideas or anything you want me to test?
