I have the same problem on an AthlonXP x86 system, booting from raid1.  I will
try booting with acpi=off when I get home.  Before installing Ubuntu, I never
had this problem with Debian on raid1 boot of an unsynced mirror, so I have a
feeling this is an issue with ubuntu, possibly in the startup scripts.
