I've tested another Ubuntu install and kernel update runs fine and without any
hiccups. Since that latter machine has only one Linux root partition and the
former, the base for the solution reported in comment #2, has 3 root partitions
(from Ubuntu 5.04, FC 4 and SUSE 9.3 install) and the two others are mounted via
fstab (/fedora4 and /suse93).

Since the machine with only Linux root partition upgraded fine, maybe the
problem reported here relates to the presence of more than one distro installed
in the same harddisk along Ubuntu 5.04.

Hope it shed some light over this issue
