Per above instructions I located 'Audigy Analog/Digital Output' in alsamixer,
and pressed 'm' to unmute.  This seems to have remedied the problem.  Though
this was not specified, I ran alsamixer then alsctl store both as root in hopes
of affecting the change globally.

Clearly this is a workaround to a bug, as a normal user wouldn't know to do
this--the settings in alsamixer are numerous and couter-intuitive.  Sound should
"just work".
