kernel oops after turning off the usb audio hardware

Attached is an Oops from kern.log

The computer was booted with the usb audio hardware turned on, so hotplug
handled it on boot. When it was turned off, the keyboard completely froze but
the mouse could still be used to shut the computer down.

Some additional info: If I boot the computer with the stereo on, the only sound
server which works is ESD.
However if I only turn on the stereo after logging in to gnome, regardless of
whether I manually modprobe snd-usb-audio, ESD doesn't work and ALSA does. (Of
course if I don't manually modprobe snd-usb-audio the whole desktop becomes
sloooow).
