Summary: sata_promise PATA port support is missing from kernels
                    later than 2.6.10-5
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: kernel-package
        AssignedTo: fabbione at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: sturmflut at lieberbiber.de
         QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

Ubuntu kernel 2.6.10-5 obviously uses a manually patched version of the
sata_promise driver that is able to detect and use the PATA port present on
Promise Fastrak/SATA 378 chipsets. The vanilla kernel series up to
feature a version of sata_promise that doesn't contain any code for handling the
PATA port and neither does Ubuntu kernel 2.6.11-1. I would use kernel 2.6.10-5
but it has some errors with handling my AMD Athlon64 CPU (cpufreq is not able to
select lower frequencies) so I have the choice to

- use Ubuntu 2.6.10-5 and have no working speedstep or
- use Ubuntu 2.6.11-1 or any vanilla kernel and have no access to the hard drive
attached to the PATA port of the Promise controller.

The best would be to include the PATA support in vanilla kernels (I already
contacted the maintainer, Jeff Garzik, about that) but until that happens it
would be fine if Ubuntu kernel 2.6.11-1 gets a PATA enabled version of
sata_promise or the Athlon64 cpufreq issue is solved.
