Other things that lead me to believe it's okay:

* The device has two pins labeled TEST on the back. When you put a jumper on, it
burns a test disc. That works fine.
* Other people on Google have the exact same error message as me
* The SATA BIOS identifies the model.
* The hdd-light-always-on-scariness thing doesn't happen until the Linux module
is loaded.
